Marine Corp Marathon 10K 2014

I successfully completed my second MCM 10K! I am really happy about it because it felt great and in the end I got a faster time than last year. First and foremost I had the best running buddy! Maria thank you so much for being a great pacer! I totally was going to run like I trained run 5 min walk 1, but it felt so good that day that we only walked for 1 min after every mile marker, except for mile 6.

I will be honest with you all, I was a big baby going into training for this race. My training plan had me training for 8 weeks and 140 miles. I think I ran 40 miles in the 8 weeks. My heart and mind wasn’t in it. I honestly thought about giving up running all together. Even on race day I totally wasn’t stressing it. We got to the metro 1hr later than we did the year before and when the race started we were still in the bathroom line ha ha ha! Once we started it felt really good. Starting at the right pace really made the race for me. I honestly think the big difference this year was that I changed my eating habits. My race experience pretty much reaffirmed what I have been doing since April. It really is all about what you eat. I didn’t physically train as hard this time around and I not only had a faster time, but I also felt much better doing it. I couldn’t really ask for anything more.

If weight loss is your main goal while on the detox than we suggest you replace 2 meals with a shake. We provide delicious and filling shake recipes. I have only replaced when I am in a hurry. What is great is that you know you are getting all the nutrients you need in the shake! If you have worked out for an hour you can have this a recovery shake with a banana yum yum! I also have the shake without banana if I workout less than one hour and also for a quick on the go snack, but I usually just put it in a shaker I don’t add additional ingredients.

Day 2

I woke up a little brighter this morning! I did my morning routine of tea, probiotic and shake. I made a berry shake with fiber, almond butter, coconut milk and vanilla and chocolate protein.  I went for a 2.38 mile run it felt ok, I struggled a bit. I didn’t really exercised that much during my last detox, but I am going to try to keep up with my running training this time. I came home around 8:30am and I grabbed a small 6 ounce shake to take with me as I went to get my hair done. I wanted to make sure I had something to snack on. For lunch I met some friends at a local favorite restaurant 195. It is really detox friendly. I had a greek salad, but without the dressing, cheese and toast.

I was still hungry so I ate some of my friends chicken and beets. On my way out I ordered a buchi air (kombucha) to go.

I am low on fizz sticks and that seemed to give me the energy to finish out the afternoon. I have an Arbonne meeting this evening so we will be eating dinner early. I am making spaghetti with meat sauce (grass-fed). Instead of regular spaghetti I am going to eat steamed zucchini. My friend Amy (Yeah, you made the blog 2 days in a row!) gave me this idea and also showed me what veggie slicer to buy. It was the easiest thing to slice!IMG_3752

Here is my dinner it was delish! The zucchini spaghetti was good. I steamed it and it was slightly crunchy, I was afraid to over steam it, but I liked it that way. Better slightly crunchy than mushy.  The Trader Joes Rustica sauce is detox friendly and pairs nicely with the meat.

I enjoyed my detox tea when I got home from my meeting. Have a good night!

Arbonne Detox Part Deux: Day 1

Hello again, I am sorry I have been away. I decided to take a summer hiatus from the blog, but I am back and ready to go! When I last left you, I had just finished the Arbonne 28 day detox and had great results. I am proud to say that I continued to be mindful of what I put in my mouth for most of the summer. I lost an additional 3lbs and felt and looked good! I came to the realization that dairy and gluten are not my friends and I have stayed away from them for about 80% of the time. When I do indulge I have to pay the price with an eczema broken out face. It really isn’t a pretty sight. At the tail end of the summer I started to lose the detox refreshing feeling, I was starting to feel sluggish and gained a few pounds that I had lost post detox. I was planning on doing the detox again in September so I could be ready for the Marine Corp 10K I am running at the end of October, but with a not so healthy August I am even more excited to be back on!

For those of you that didn’t follow me before I will give you a quick review of this detox. The Arbonne 28 day detox is based on clean and whole food eating. We take away the foods that are not good for you. The goal is to bring your body’s ph to neutral so we remove all the acidic producing foods and replace them with alkaline producing foods. It is not a fad and it is not a diet. It’s an entire new way of eating. We use Arbonne products such as their vegan protein, probiotic, fiber, detox tea, energy fizz sticks and fit chews to make the 28 days bearable and to make sure we are consuming the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals.  Here is a glimpse of what the detox is about.

So now you probably asking yourself what is Arbonne? Arbonne is a health and wellness company with a European heritage. Arbonne has an ingredient policy that prides itself of being pure, safe and beneficial. If you want to learn more click here.

I will take you on my journey again. It helps me be accountable and I also want to share this detox because it really has changed my life for the better. This past summer was the first time in a LONG time I felt comfortable in my own skin, gladly put on a bathing suit and liked what I saw in the mirror. More importantly, I felt great and had more energy.  If you have any questions or comments please share in the comment question! So here we go…

Day One

Woke up weighed and measured my waist at belly button and also one inch below belly button. I went and had my probiotic and tea. I had to wait with my older son in the car at the bus stop because it was POURING rain, so I had my morning shake (frozen berries, scoop of vanilla and one scoop of protein, tablespoon of almond butter and 9 ounces of coconut milk) around 7:20am.  At around 8:15am  I went to the gym I ran intervals for 2 miles and then went to a 30 min TRX circuit class. I came home and made my recovery shake which was 1/2 a banana, 2 scoops of chocolate protein, one tablespoon of almond butter and 9 ounces of coconut milk.  At about 12:30pm I made myself an egg scramble with Tuscan kale, mushrooms, jalapeno, red pepper and red onion. It was really good!

Before I left to pick up my youngest from school I had 2 fit chews. Later in the afternoon I closed my eyes for what I thought was 20 minutes turned out being 45 min!!! I should have had an afternoon  energy fizz stick. Since I over napped I was late with starting dinner so I wasn’t able to eat before 7pm. I made this paleo recipe my friend Amy gave to me. It is a Thai chicken stir fry with cauliflower rice. It was delicious!

I am currently enjoying my night-time detox tea. Looking forward to what tomorrow brings. I am currently training for 10K in October so I have to run 4 miles tomorrow, but I promise to listen to my body.

28 Day Detox Boot Camp

Long time no see! I am sorry I have been out of touch. Other commitments have kept me away from writing and frankly I didn’t have anything interesting to write about until now! After much soul-searching I have decided to do Arbonne Essential’s 28 Day Detox Boot Camp. My body needs a restart and I hope that this is where I can find it.  I have been working out and even changed it up, but my eating is still not great. Eating is what is holding me back from any significant weight loss. It’s not that I want to lose a ton of weight, but 5 lbs would be nice. After the MCM 10K in October I have put on some extra lbs and I have reverted back to some bad eating habits. Not eating much during the day, eating double portions at dinner and completely gorging on the weekends. Even though losing a bit of weight would be nice I am mainly doing this because, I want to get rid of the icky feeling I currently have been carrying around all of 2014.

Why the Arbonne Detox Boot Camp?  I have recently switched over my protein powder to their protein and I love it! I was using whey protein, but when I learn how whey really isn’t that good for you it was a no brainer for me to switch to a vegan protein. I looked more into their detox and it doesn’t deprive you of food at all. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s a healthy way to restart. Here is a snap shot look at the detox.

Another reason why I decided on this particular detox is because, I do have to invest some money in the Arbonne products and that I think will make me less likely to quit.  Arbonne Essential products are pure safe and beneficial. They are formulated without gluten and have no artificial sweeteners, colors or flavors. They contain no cholesterol, trans fats or animal products.  When you sign up for the detox you don’t sign up to do it alone.  We have an amazing support group during the 28 days. I am not alone. I have 2 wonderful leaders and fellow detoxers. They give us a weekly meal plan and grocery list and answer any question at any time of day through a closed Facebook group.

I will be writing a daily journal on here to chronicle my journey. I start on April 21st! If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about this detox please leave a comment!  Wish me luck!

Gratitude and Thanks

On the last post I briefly mentioned how I had some of the winter blues, well they had hit me harder than I thought and that came known to me after 4 days of snow days for the boys. I know a lot of mothers feel this way. The truth of it is being a stay at home mom is at times a very unappreciated profession.  The decision for me to stay at home had many layers, but one of the main reasons is because I wanted to be with my kids full-time. I fully know that it was my decision and I don’t want to come off as being ungrateful with my gripes.  With all that being said it is not that I expect a lot of appreciation, but an unsolicited thanks or an evening at the dinner table without whining about the food I made would be fabulous.

This past Thursday I was doing my regular cleaning.  I came to the realization that I was picking up more than I was cleaning. I hate feeling that people in my household expect that I am going to pick up their socks, pencils, books  etc and put those items in their proper home. Well, that send me over the proverbial edge. Angry mommy came out and castigated every one in her path. Well, that evening I felt bad for my behavior (especially since not focusing on the negative is one of my monthly goals for February) but, instead of apologizing I just started feeling sorry for myself. I also had a birthday approaching on Feb 2 and I had an inkling that my husband hadn’t really planned anything for me. I am normally not a huge, “I have to do all this stuff for my birthday”, but I have really had a bad attitude for over the past year that I had to share my birthday with the Super Bowl.  So I am already feeling sorry for myself and then my hubby is being very flighty about my birthday… so I just lost it. I actually said, “In all the years we have been married I have planned so much stuff for you, but I can’t think of one time you have done considerable planning on anything for me.” Yeah, not by proudest moment, I had to get it out for whatever reason not really thinking on how that would make my husband feel. Selfish, yes, but I am glad I got it out, because I felt a huge weight lift.  The next day I vowed to put that behind me and no matter the circumstances to just have fun on my birthday weekend and to be nice to my family.

Friday and Saturday I was ok, I felt better. I knew I had to snap out of it and I was hoping that getting back into our routine would help. Since winter break we haven’t gone back to our regular routine, because each week since the boys returned to school we have had some weather delay and closure. Over the years I have come to realize that I am a creature of routine and when it gets disrupted so do I.  Saturday was a busy day, but as a treat to myself I had scheduled a 90 min massage  and  evening we were going to our friends Kate and Peter’s house-warming party. Click here to see what happened when we walked in……

My dear husband and the wonderful friends that I have in my life had been planning a surprise party for me for about two months. Not only that, but my sister-in-law Jo-Anne, Vanessa, Matt and Amy all came in from out-of-town to be at my party. That floored me!!! It was very humbling to know that so many of your loved ones took time out of their life to plan something for you. And that the person I was so sure was going to fail me, was the master mind behind it all.  Let me tell you how foolish I felt for having my episode a few days before. This was a huge wake up call for me. I need to really keep the positive in the fore front of my life. I need to be thankful for all the great things I have in my life and not worry about little insignificant things. Most importantly, we all have friends and family that love us and care a lot about us. When we are feeling down, we should refocus on that.  With all that being said I want to thank my loving husband for planning my surprise party. You really got me Jeff! I had no idea! Thank you to Kate and Peter for hosting, getting your house ready and cooking a delicious meal. Finally thank you to my friends that came, Matt, Vanessa, Jo-Anne, Amy, Jen, Josh, Tammy, Jen, Rachel, Corrie, Joe, Nicole, Mauricio and all the kiddos! You all made me very happy and gave me a wonderful memory that I will carry with me until my last day.

Burpee Box Jumps Are the Devil….

but are they sure are worth the pain!

Before I continue I want to apologize that I haven’t posted much this month. It has been a very crazy hectic month. Once the summer rolls around and our schedule is less jammed packed.  I hope to post on a regular basis once again. I have some posts ideas that I am gnawing on so please stay tuned.

Today I wanted to share the really hard work out I did today. It was again one of those situations where it looks easy on the white board, but in reality it sucks! The burpee box jumps are killer and they took me FOREVER. In case you don’t know what this gem of an exercise is just look below.

The WOD took me about an hour. I was a disgusting mess at the end, but it was totally worth it!

FHC CrossFit WOD, 5/20:
100 m sprint
20 burpee Box Jump 24/20
100 m sprint

I Love And Accept Myself And My Life Now…

I finally got to a yoga class this new year at the Hot Asana Yoga studio yesterday.  I was deep in a pose and saw this quote on a banner they had hanging up, “I love and accept myself and my life now.”  It rang true to how I feel now. Tomorrow, I start the journey of a new year ( I will be 36. Yes, I know it’s Groundhog’s day and please don’t ask me if I have seen my shadow). For the first time ever I am at total peace with my current station in life. I really couldn’t ask for more.  God has graciously blessed me with so many wonderful things.  I am in a loving and happy marriage with my best friend, my boys are growing up to be fine young men, I am happy with all the relationships (family and friends) I have in my life and most importantly I am happy with me.

We have the tendency to always be worrying about what is going on next. We always question how we can move on to bigger and better things. We are always looking forward. Don’t get me wrong; looking forward is a good thing. Wanting to be a better person or be in a better place is a good thing.  We should always try to improve ourselves and our life if we deem it necessary.  With that said, I feel that in looking forward and in trying to improve aspects of our lives we many times forget to live in the present. We don’t  enjoy our current station in life to the fullest.  So as I embark on my 37th year in this world, I am going to take time and enjoy the present and savor all the hard work that has gotten me to this moment!
